Spiritual Tool #4: Move Your Body Because the Hinges of An Active Door Never Rust!

Although the world feels pretty “dark” out there right now, there is definitely a shift occurring. Can you sense or feel it? The old self-limiting story that has dominated our world for centuries–one based in fear and lack–is exhausted, outdated, and dying. We are currently witnessing its demise. A new story is emerging, one whose time has come. It tells us we are magnificent beyond our wildest dreams. It is grounded in compassion, wisdom, and joy. It trusts in the guidance of the heart. It knows we are truly all connected and very creative. It believes that we are capable of the greatest transformation we have yet to experience as human beings: our ability to claim, embody, and use our innate spiritual light to create, as author Charles Eisenstein says, the “more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.”

But I don’t have to tell you we haven’t fully crossed over the threshold into this new life-affirming story. As we hover in that liminal space between the two stories, it feels alarming, distressing, and exhilarating all at the same time! Alarming because of the challenges that face us and exhilarating because of the potential this time holds. If you are called to help birth the new story into being (in whatever way you choose, it doesn’t matter how small or big it is), know that a spiritual toolbox is a must. If your toolbox is stocked, opened daily, and well-used, it will help you withstand the waves of change that are coming. It fortifies your Spirit like nothing else and helps you be the change agent you were born to be.

In this blog (and previous blogs) I continue to share with you what’s in my toolbox.

When my energy starts to plummet, my passion starts to sink, or doubt begins to rear its distrusting head, I go to my toolbox and ask myself some questions. Here’s one of them: When was the last time I did some Qigong or moved my body through some form of exercise?

Why do I include moving my body as one of my main spiritual tools? Because I know that it is my spirit that will carry me through the exponential changes we now face. Therefore, I better make sure it has a healthy place to live. As French philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, says: “We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Yoda, the Jedi master from the Star Wars movies explains it even more directly when he says: “luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.” While I wouldn’t call my body “crude matter” I do believe that my essence (and yours) is luminous. It is pure light and deserves the most comfortable home I can provide it while I have this experience we call being human. After exercising, my body feels invigorated and strong, old emotional energy has moved on, and my mind is open to inspiration.

There are two forms of exercise I love that always, without exception, shift my take on reality: walking and qigong. Even though I know first-hand the benefits of moving my body and doing these exercises, I often have to convince, cajole, and sweet-talk myself into doing them. But there was never a walk I regretted taking. There has never been a qigong session where I said: “That was a waste of time.” Even though my body seems to prefer zoning out on the couch, I am slowly becoming its “master” and now– more often than not–my spirit gets to call the shots.

Our bodies are meant to move. As they say in Chinese medicine, “flowing water never stagnates and the hinges of an active door never rusts.” Being sedentary inhibits our ability to clear stagnant energy and think creatively. So whether it’s walking, qigong, yoga, dance, or Pilates (you name it), the idea is to choose something and do it regularly. I guarantee it will shift your take on reality.

Here’s one more bonus for moving your body. You’ve probably heard that the most powerful place to be is in the present moment. We can only be in the present moment if we are in our bodies. Movement and exercise helps us get there!

If you’d like to move your body in some simple qigong, join me in a short video called Your 10-minute Qigong Vitality Break. It’s a great way to clear stress and increase energy and vitality.
